Information

Get to know Rodeiro

Like many other municipalities in the area, Rodeiro was born under the protection of a large family and its fortress in the fourteenth century. However, this village hides vestiges of much older cultures, such as the remains of the ancient Roman villa “Porta de Arcos” and churches of the thirteenth century considered authentic jewels of Galician Romanesque.

The pilgrim will not miss any service in this stay despite the fact that the village only offers basic services. In addition, it is recommended that the walker takes a stroll to know the important heritage that has Rodeiro.

How to get there

The main way to get to the municipality of Rodeiro is by the A-6 highway linking A Coruña and Madrid; you have to turn off at the exit of Lugo to link the N-540 that directs you to Rodeiro, after some detours. By the AP-53, which joins Santiago and Ourense; at the height of the latter should take the N-540 towards Lugo until the arrival at Rodeiro, although at the height of Lalín can take a regional road that will also take you. The same happens with the A-52; you must leave at the height of Ourense to continue on the N-540.

It is also possible to reach the municipality by bus since there are several regular lines that operate daily from the main Galician cities.

What to see

Iglesia de San Vicente

The church of Rodeiro is a beautiful temple built in honor of San Vicente, patron saint of the town of Rodeiro. It was built in the 12th century and still retains some Romanesque elements.

It is remarkable for its belfry with two openings, one above the other, the larger one houses the bell tower and the smaller one is circular and decorative.

Porta de Arcos

The Porta de Arco is a famous archaeological site that began to be investigated in 1972 with the initiative of the Museum of Pontevedra. The result was amazing, finding a large number of footprints and remains of a large Roman villa.

There were magnificent column bases, weapons of war, iron nails, pieces of bricks, tiles, typical Roman pottery and lots of glass. Currently all these remains can be visited in the Provincial Museum of Pontevedra and in the Municipal Museum of Rodeiro also find some objects, but the sample is quite smaller.

Gastronomy

What stands out above anything else in the municipality of Rodeiro is the wild boar meat, which is why in February a great hunting festival is held where this meat is the star. It also stands out as in most of the places in Galicia the lacón con grelos and the cocido gallego (Galician stew).
