The town of La Bañeza has stood out since ancient times for its trading character thanks to its location as a true crossroads. Today it still retains that trading spirit.

The town is close to the city of Astorga, the point where the pilgrims coming from Seville will cross paths with those coming from Roncesvalles.

How to get there

The main way to get to La Bañeza is by road, the town is reached by several highways, the most important is the A-6 highway that connects Madrid with A Coruña, the national CL-622 that connects with León and the LE-125 communicates with Sanabria.

To reach the village by public transport it is best to reach Benavente or Astorga, once in one of the two cities take one of the buses that communicate with La Bañeza daily.

What to see

Iglesia de Santa María

It was erected in the first half of the 16th century at the request of the Bazán family, lords of La Bañeza. It is a temple of starred Gothic style with a basilica plan formed by three naves separated by Gothic and Renaissance pillars. Its original structure underwent major rebuilding since the seventeenth century so that today so few elements of the original construction are preserved.

This temple was built during the ninth century but its original structure was demolished and later recovered in the eleventh century. Initially it was a hospital for pilgrims on the Camino, as it was located in the nerve center of the town and on the road to Santiago de Compostela.

The magnificent facade of the cemetery is a work of architecture of the city. The frontispiece stands out for having been erected in the year 1887 by Juan Bautista Lázaro de Diego.

Mudejar style with reddish bricks, above the entrance arch and its iron gate there is a panel of the Municipal Cemetery and above it a small lighthouse.

Centro de Interpretación de las Tierras Bañezanas

This interpretation center was inaugurated in 2011 in a modernist style building erected in the early twentieth century. This building originally served as a flour factory, specifically until 1996. Subsequently it was renovated to house the premises of this center and the Tourist Office.

Casa Consistorial

The town hall of La Bañeza is a neoclassicist style building built between 1900 and 1909 by the well-known architect Lázaro Cárdenas. Years later, a hexagonal tower with a slate roof and a carillon was added, thanks to which the Hymn of Joy is played every hour.

Capilla de Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno

This curious temple built in the seventeenth century houses inside the Imaginero Museum. In it there is a large sample of pieces such as the carvings of the Amargura and a Nazarene, by Luis Salvador Carmona. In addition, research work is also carried out in these facilities. It underwent numerous extensions throughout the twentieth century, the most important to condition the space to the museum.

Capilla de Nuestra Señora de las Angustias y la Soledad

This small 16th century temple consists of a single nave, inside which there is an image of the Angustias dating from 1600. It also houses other interesting paintings such as the Passion of the seventeenth century or the image of Santo Potajero. Formerly this space was used as the headquarters of the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Sorrows and Solitude.

Antiguo Hospital

It is believed to be the oldest building in the entire city of La Bañeza, dating back to 1539. It still retains some elements of the original building, although a major reconstruction took place in 1897. The building is not open to the public but you can admire its beautiful brick facade.
