What to see

Restos de las Murallas

In 1640, at the beginning of the war with Portugal, a wall was built around Verín, measuring more than two kilometers in length, in order to encircle and protect the town from possible attacks. This wall was erected following the structural techniques of the time, but its lack of solidity and its low height did not meet the expectations; the neighbors even fled the town on several occasions to take refuge in the mountains closer to the place of Monterrey.a

Gastronomy

The gastronomy of Verín is very remarkable thanks to the quality of its products, the most traditional recipes are the Galician stew, meat or caldeiro, Galician octopus, broths, pies, tripe, ears and snouts. In spite of being a locality without coast, the fish arrives very fresh and it is very common to taste in the zone fish like sardines, squids, codfish, zamburiñas, boga, trout, eel, etc. Do not forget to accompany your meal with a good local wine. On the pastry side, the bishop’s tongues, the bicas, the roscones and the almond cake stand out. It is also worth mentioning the homemade fruit liqueurs and brandy that are made in the area.
