Get to know Grado

The Primitive Way as it passes through the municipality of Grado has always been very important since it was the way of passage for the pilgrims who went from Oviedo to visit San Salvador.

The pilgrims were motivated by the popular saying; “Who goes to Santiago and does not go to the Savior, honors the servant and leaves the Lord”. So you had to go to honor both.

At present both the town of Grado and San Juan de Villapañada are the end of stage, each pilgrim decides where to spend the night. Both towns belong to the same municipality and are only 3 kilometers apart.

The second option is the train, there is a railway line that connects Oviedo with San Esteban de Pravia with a stop in the municipality of Grado.

Gastronomy

The gastronomy of the town of Grado has a great similarity with the typical gastronomy of the principality. But it is worth mentioning the exquisite desserts made by the locals such as the tocinillo de cielo, the cuajada and the escaldao. Two very typical local products are the spelt bread, made with a type of spelt or wild wheat, and the Afuega’l pitu cheese. This cheese has its own denomination of origin and, depending on the level of curing, it has a milder or stronger flavor.
