Pontevedra boasts of being the second most important urban area of Galicia, only surpassed by the monumental area of Santiago. That is why the vast majority of pilgrims make a stop in this small city to explore its corners and cobbled streets, highlighting above all the Plaza de la Peregrina and its Sanctuary.
Despite not being a large city, Pontevedra was awarded on several occasions for being one of the best European cities to live, following criteria of accessibility, mobility, cultural richness and standard of living. It is therefore considered the capital of the Rías Baixas.

How to get there
Pontevedra is very well connected as it is crossed by the AP-9 freeway and the N-554. Therefore it is easy to find links to both Vigo and A Coruña.
In addition, the city center has a bus and train station, so the city is connected to the main points of Galicia as Santiago, Vilagarcía, Vigo, A Coruña and Ourense. There are also links to Portugal and the rest of the Peninsula.
The representative port of the city is that of Marin, a few kilometers from the center. The nearest airport is Peinador, in Vigo.

What to see
Puente del Burgo
The Burgo Bridge, of Roman origin, was built in order to maintain the course of the Lérez River on one of its significant connecting routes, the XIX road. The bridge remained standing until the middle of the 12th century, although in such poor condition that a new one had to be built next to it.
Currently, the bridge forms part of the route of the Portuguese Way.

Pazo Provincial
The Pazo Provincial is an eclectic style building built by Alejandro Rodriguez Sesmeros in the late nineteenth century. It was recently restored in order to enable the building to house the Provincial Council.

Pazo da Cultura
The Pazo da Cultura is a building built in 1997 by Manuel de las Casas in order to be a set of buildings designed on a landscape scale. At present, the building has a modern auditorium, a conference area and an exhibition hall where plays, conferences, concerts and exhibitions are held.

Mercado de Abastos
The Mercado de Abastos was built in the vicinity of the Lérez river more than half a century ago, so in 2003 it was restored thanks to César Portela. At this same time with some excavations that were made is discovered a part of the Roman wall.
The building, besides standing out for its great historical value, has a wide range of products related to food. On the first floor there are fish, flower and meat stalls, and on the second floor there are vegetable and fruit stalls, as well as meat and cheese stalls.

Teatro Principal y Liceo Casino
The Main Theater was built in the heart of the city where the Church of San Bartolomé was located and rebuilt after a fortuitous fire in 1980. Next to it, you can see some attractive buildings such as the 15th century Casa de las Campanas on Calle de Don Filiberto, which retains its main facade.

Santuario de la Peregrina
The Sanctuary of the Pilgrim is one of the best known temples of the city, built in honor of the Virgin of the Pilgrim, which was responsible for guiding pilgrims from Baiona to Santiago, in 1778 and declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1982
.
The temple combines a late baroque style with neoclassical forms as in the main altarpiece. The plant of the sanctuary is shaped like a scallop symbolizing the pilgrims. In 2008 it underwent a restoration process.

San Roque A Moureira
The Chapel of San Roque was built in order to honor San Roque. At first, this temple was erected in the vicinity of the port in order to safeguard the city against possible plagues and epidemics that came aboard ships. But years later the chapel was moved several times, until finally, in 1861, it was located in A Moureira.
At present the temple still retains various elements belonging to its original structure.

Ruinas de San Domingos
The Church of San Domingos was built around the 14th century and declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1895. At present only the chancel and the facade of the chapter house can be seen.
The interior of the temple houses a large set of tombstones which have several coats of arms and medieval tombs belonging to historical figures such as Paio and Sueiro Gomez de Soutomaior. It is also possible to find the remains of Tristán de Montenegro and Pedro Álvarez de Soutomaior, a Galician aristocrat better known as Pedro Madruga.

Plaza del Teucro
The Teucro Square, the name comes from a legend that tells that the archer Teucro, a native of Greece, after the Trojan War moved to the West in order to found Pontevedra.
This space is surrounded by patrician houses dating back to the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

Plaza del Peirao
The Plaza del Peirao is located on the site where the old peiraos (docks) of the city were located. Of note in this space is the round fountain built in the eighteenth century and culminating with a curious statue.
In addition, you can also see the remains of the house where Paio Gómez Chariño lived and an old farmhouse that houses the headquarters of the Professional Association of Technical Architects.

Plaza de San José
The Plaza de San José houses a monument in honor of the gatherings of the five intellectual nobles linked to Pontevedra in the twentieth century. This is surrounded by two of the most important cultural centers of the city: the Abanca Sociocultural Center and the Café Moderno.

Plaza de Méndez Núñez
Traditionally this square was called Plaza de las Gallinas, due to the poultry market that was held there in front of the large mansion of the Cruz and Montenegro. This 15th century mansion was the main residence of Rear-Admiral Casto Méndez Núñez, who died in 1869, shortly after the battle of El Callao (Peru).
At the end of the 19th century, this building was used as the nucleus of important gatherings of thinkers and writers of the time, such as Valle Inclán, since it housed the famous Muruais Library.
A statue was built in the square in memory of the famous author of the Sonatas.

The Plaza de las cinco calles has two very important elements to be highlighted, the house where the illustrious writer Valle Inclán lived and the transept of the house from the late eighteenth century and brought to this square after the end of the Civil War.

Plaza de la Verdura
The Plaza de la Verdura owes its name to the traditional vegetable markets that were held there in the past and are still held today. It stands out among all the buildings surrounding this square, the light factory built in the nineteenth century and Pontevedra became one of the pioneer cities in having such service.
Also worth mentioning is the fact that in this square there is a fountain exactly like the one found in the Plaza de Curros Enriquez.

Plaza de la Peregrina
On the occasion of the construction of the sanctuary of the Virgen de la Peregrina, this square was built in the late eighteenth century. Its location was not accidental since, despite being outside the protection of the walls, it was located in the middle of the Roman road, a route also followed by pilgrims on their way to Santiago.
It is currently one of the nerve centers of the city, having been remodeled several times over the years and the last being in the fifties.

Plaza de la Ferrería
The Plaza de la Ferrería is one of the most popular squares of the city, whose name comes from the forges that were arranged in their arcades. The most outstanding feature of this space is the fountain of the Ironworks, built in the sixteenth century and renovated in 1930.
Another element of the square that is worth noting is the Renaissance-style house known as the House of Faces or House of the Barbeitos for its various face-shaped sculptures arranged along the south facade.
In the same we also find the church of San Francisco and the Delegation of Finance, a building built in 1800 whose gateway corresponds to the old gate of Santo Domingo, which belonged to the old medieval wall.

Museo de Pontevedra
The Museum of Pontevedra is spread over six historic buildings in the city: the Castro Monteagudo and García Flórez buildings, the Sarmiento building, the Fernández López building, the Ruins of San Domingos and the new building, known as the “Sixth building”. Inaugurated by the Provincial Council in 1927. Thanks to be so distributed and present so much value is presented as one of the best museums in Spain.
Of the different buildings of which the museum is composed the most important are the baroque houses of Castro Monteagudo and García Flórez and the Sarmiento building, which was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1962. The latter that stands out for the importance and diversity of its funds, in which you can admire pieces and documents ranging from prehistory to the present day.

Capilla del Nazareno
Built in the Middle Ages, this chapel located in Tetuán street in the city of Pontevedra follows a clear baroque style. The first month of March a curious pilgrimage takes place, where the faithful go to this temple to ask the holy Nazarene the famous “Three Graces”, interceding for them and granting them what they have asked for. It is very usual that long lines are formed, with the most devout coming early in the morning to take place.

Jardines de Castro Sampedro
The Casto Sampedro Gardens are a natural complex located in front of the Convent of San Francisco. This space has gardens of roses and camellias among which stands out a wonderful 16th century fountain built by Domingos Fernandez and Joao Lopez. It was later replaced by a more modest one in the mid-19th century, but in 1930 the fountain returned to the Ferrería square after being repaired by the architect Salgado.

Illa do Cobo
A Illa do Cobo also known as Island of Sculptures, houses a unique environment of environmental, agricultural and cultural heritage. The creation of this island was a pioneer in Spain and it was achieved that a real environment became a permanent space incorporating very modern elements.
A total of twelve artists were invited to endow the island with different artistic sculptures, including Giovanni Anselmo, Fernando Casás, José Pedro Croft, Dan Graham, Francisco Leiro, Richard Long, Robert Morris, Anne & Patrick Poirier, Ulrich Rückriem and Enrique Velasco. Each of these artists incorporated a work related to the landscape, to the tradition of the place and to the essence of man and his connection to nature.

Iglesia de San Bartolomé
The Church of San Bartolomé is a Jesuit temple of baroque style built between 1696 and 1714. Inside it houses a surprising group of altarpieces and carvings made by artists such as Pedro de Mena, Gregorio Fernández, Pedro de Campo or Bieito Silveira.
We should highlight the image of the Virgen de la O, patron saint of the city and the image of the Magdalena.

Iglesia de San Francisco
The Church of San Francisco, belonging to the Franciscan order, was built in the fourteenth century and declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1896. From the interior of the temple it is worth mentioning the figure of the Nazarene of the 19th century, the mural paintings and the tomb of Paio Gómez Chariño, an illustrious poet who composed and recited poems and who, in addition, was an admiral.

Convento de Santa Clara
The Convent of Santa Clara currently only preserves the church that was part of the convent complex. This temple was built in the second half of the fourteenth century with a Gothic style, although we can see inside a great set of baroque altarpieces that were included in successive reforms to which the church was subjected.

Casa del Barón de Casa Goda
The Casa del Barón de Casa Goda is a Renaissance-style manor house with a large neoclassical facade, which was built in the sixteenth century. Located in the heart of the city was the former home of the Counts of Maceda and currently, inside it houses the Parador de Turismo of the city of Pontevedra.

Basílica de Santa María la Mayor
The Basilica of Santa María la Mayor combines late Gothic and Renaissance styles and was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1931. It is worth mentioning the main facade of the temple, from the 16th century, for representing one of the most important works of Plateresque style in Galicia, housing in it a curious image of St. Xerome with glasses.
From the interior it is worth mentioning the 16th century image of Christ of the Disenclave, the 18th century Christ of the Sailors and the marvelous ribbed vaults.

Alameda Palmeras Vicenti
In the historic center of the city of Pontevedra, we find a price space composed of three perfectly differentiated areas; the Alameda, the Garden of Eduardo Vicenti and the Paseo de las Palmeiras.
Since the demolition of the walled enclosure and caused a strong urban expansion towards the outside, this set was considered the urban center of the city. It is at this time when the City Hall, the Institute, the Provincial Council and the current headquarters of Education are also erected. Behind these buildings are the Vicenti gardens and the Paseo de las Palmeras, an interesting walk to meet some exotic species.

Plaza da Pedreira y Pazo de Mugartegui
Formerly known as Plaza de la Hierba (Grass Square), its name derives from the stone works that the stonemasons of the city used to carry out. In this square stands the Pazo de Mugartegui, dating from between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. This building has a Galician baroque style and, at present, underwent a restoration in order to house the headquarters of the Regulatory Council of the Designation of Origin of Rías Baixas Wines.

Plaza de Curros Enríquez
The Plaza de Curros Enríquez, whose name honors the famous writer from Orense, houses the monument to Alexandre Bóveda, founder along with Castelao of the Partido Galeguista in Pontevedra. In addition we must also mention the magnificent iron fountain, built in the nineteenth century and recently renovated.
