What to see

Monte Castelo

Mount O Castelo de Cans is also known as “O Pianista” by the appearance that, over the years, was taking its rock. The name is due to the fact that on its summit was built in the eleventh century an ancient medieval fortress called “O Castelo de Miravel”, of which are preserved today various remains and traces on the rock where the old castle was located.

Fuente do Cristo

The Fuente do Cristo was built in 1904 by the architect Antonio Palacios and finished a year later, in honor of an old cruise that was in the same place. It is a fountain structured in two parts, the first consists of an octagonal base with four supports to bridge the unevenness of the square and is surrounded by eight tiny but thick columns and in the second part are the channels of water alternating with ornamental elements decorated with floral motifs.

Above the water channels there is a column of classical cut seated on an octagonal protruding body and topped by a capital with vegetal decoration on which stands the statue of a page bearing the coat of arms of O Porriño and a spear. This figure is the work of master Cerviño.

Casa Consistorial

The new Town Hall of the town was built due to the state of deterioration of the previous one. It was erected, therefore, on the land where the old town hall was located by the architect Antonio Palacios, finishing the works in 1924.

The architect of the work added a beautiful portico to the building giving it a great continuity to the area of the arcades that are arranged in the square. Inspired by the Cathedral-Fortresses of medieval origin, Palacios added architectural elements to the building, among which we can highlight the battlements at the culmination of the towers and high areas of the building as well as large buttresses surrounding the tower.

Capilla do Cristo

The Chapel of Christ was built in 1898 thanks to Servando Ramilo Nieves, who donated his land and defrayed all expenses in order to build a temple in honor of Christ of the Agony.

The figure of the said Christ currently still presides over the temple and we also find at the two sides of the main altar two other altars of small proportions.

Botica Nova

The Botica Nova is a building constructed by Antonio Palacios in 1912 with the purpose of housing a pharmacy that would also serve as a place of residence for his brother José Palacios. The works of this pharmacy began in 1909, when Antonio Palacios decided to dispense with the decoration of the contemporary era and decided to highlight only the structural traces of the building.

The access to the building is framed by a huge arch that breaks the union of vertical and horizontal lines arranged on the facade of the building.

Gastronomy

The typical gastronomy of this town is very similar to that of the rest of the Galician community, where eels and lamprey stand out as well as empanada and stews. You cannot leave Porriño without tasting the traditional tripe of the village and the products of the oldest bakery in the village (Paso A Nivel). Honey and the traditional bread roll with hard crust and tender crumb is another very typical product.
