The city of Barcelos has a very special link with the traditional colorful crested rooster, which although it is a symbol of the whole country, the seal of identity originated in this town.

It also houses a large number of monuments and a wonderful landscape that makes Barcelos a must stop for any pilgrim who travels the Portuguese Way.

How to get there

The only major road that reaches the city of Barcelos is the A-11, which connects the entire northern half of the peninsula without setting foot in Madrid, that is, it starts in Soria and ends in Portugal, although there are unfinished stretches.

Torre da Porta Nova

The Torre da Porta Nova is part of the 15th century wall. From the 17th century until 1932 it functioned as a prison. Today this building is used as the Centro de Interpretaçao do Galo e da Cidade de Barcelos. It was inaugurated in 2013.

Teatro Gil Vicente

The Gil Vicente Theater was built at the end of the 19th century and has a neoclassical style façade. However, subsequent modifications made it a very modern building adapted to the needs of today’s theatrical performances.

Teatro Gil Vicente

Puente Medieval

The Medieval bridge was repaired in the early fourteenth century giving it a Gothic appearance that connects Barcelos with Barcelinhos. This construction has reinforcement elements to balance the weights and make it resistant to the passage of currents.

Pelourinho

Pelourinho also known as Picota, was built between the late fifteenth century and early sixteenth century, so it has a Gothic appearance. This transept has a stepped hexagonal base and at the top, instead of showing a usual cross, it presents a curious reliquary shape.

Monte da Franqueira

Mount da Franqueira is an area that has a magnificent viewpoint and extends over the sea coast from Esposende to Póvoa de Varzim. From this place you can see the end of the course of the Cávado river as well as enjoy the views, both of the city and the surroundings of Barcelos. Besides that, it provides a panoramic view over the Monte do Sameiro and Bom Jesus in Braga and the small mountain ranges of Gerês to the east. This area has abundant natural, cultural, archaeological, religious and ethnographic heritage. Of this heritage stands out for its beauty the Convento do Calvário do Bom Jesus da Franqueira, the Fonte da Vida, Castro e Castelo de Faria, Moinho de Vento, Escadóiro e Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Franqueira.

This mountain is considered the Sacred Mount of the Barcelenses, so that thousands of people go to it annually.

The Misericórdia building was the former Convento dos Capuchos, whose church was very rich, although a fire at the end of the 19th century destroyed much of its baroque elements. It possesses an image of Santa Maria from the 16th century.

Jardín das Barrocas

The Jardim das Barrocas also known as Passeio dos Assentos ou das Obras is a monumental work carried out in the 18th century in provincial rococo style. It has small and original gardens, very worthy of admiration for the striking colors of its floral species.

Iglesia Matriz

The Matriz Church was begun in the second half of the 14th century by order of Don Pedro, the third Count of Barcelos, whose arms are engraved on the archivolts of the main portal. It is a building in which the transition from Romanesque to Gothic can be appreciated. It was quite reformed throughout the XV and XVIII centuries. On the south side of the facade has a tower dating from the eighteenth century.

Edificio Cámara Municipal

The Câmara Municipal building was created thanks to a set of reforms and extensions from the nucleus of the old Pazos of the City Hall. This complex includes the old Hospital do Espírito Santo, which served as an aid station for pilgrims, and the old Chapel of Santa Maria, both dating from the 14th century.

The Galo cross is located inside the Archaeological Museum, in the Pazo de los Condes, and it is a cross that alludes to the miracles of San Tiago and the hanged man, a legend popularly known as the Legend of the Rooster.

Largo do Apoio is the first street of the “Burgo” and is reminiscent of the medieval urbanism of the city of Barcelos. In this place is located, right in the center, a Renaissance-style cruise, probably the work of João Lopes. In its surroundings are the Casa dos Carmonas, the Casa do Alferes Barcelense and the Casa do Santo Condestável Don Nuno Álvares Pereira.

Templo do Bom Jesus da Cruz

The origin of the Templo do Bom Jesus da Cruz is related to the appearance of a miraculous black earth cross on the ground of Campo da Feira in December 1504. The current temple was opened for worship in 1710. This building has a centered dome and floor plan with the interior space arranged in a Greek cross. This temple serves each year as a central balcony to celebrate the Traditional Festa das Cruzes.

Don António Barroso Street is one of the oldest streets in the historic center. It is currently one of the liveliest in terms of trade. It is located in it a large group of buildings of architectural interest of which stand out some constructions such as the Caixa Geral de Depósitos building of the architect Ernesto Korrodi, the House of Mathias Gonçalves da Cruz which is covered by polychrome tiles, etc.

Quinta de Paços is a house that has been maintained for more than 500 years, since it was in the hands of 15 generations of the same family. It is a family winemaking company that explores an area of over 200 hectares divided by several quintas, where quality is mixed with innovation. It was recently restored and is presented as a space of excellence for wine tourism.

Pazo dos Condes de Barcelos

The pazo dos Condes de Barcelos is characteristic of the late Middle Ages. It was built in the first half of the 15th century by order of Don Alfonso, eighth Count of Barcelos and first Duke of Bragança. The Archaeological Museum was installed in this pazo at the beginning of the 20th century.

Monumento a Don Antonio Barroso

The monument to António Barroso was inaugurated in 1931. It is a bronze work designed by the architect Marques da Silva and made by the sculptor Sousa Caldas. It is located in front of the City Hall and the Matriz Church, erected in honor of this missionary, a native of Barcelos, for his preaching work in Africa.

The Church of Santo António was built in the 30’s of the 20th century, taking advantage of the materials resulting from the demolition of the Church dos Terceiros. The order of the Capuchin Franciscans has been based here since 1934.

Iglesia de Nossa Senhora do Terço

The Church of Nossa Senhora do Terço is part of the former convent of Benedictine nuns, dating from the early eighteenth century. The church has a large interior space. Its importance in Baroque art is given mainly by its blue and white tile panels, dated 1713, showing scenes from the life of Saint Bento and moralizing emblems with valuable gilded carving.

Capilla dos Lopes de Amorim

The Casa dos Lopes de Amorim is located on the street of San Francisco and is a palatial building dating from the eighteenth century. It is a noble building, with a neoclassical appearance and presents a floral decoration, highlighting especially in the windows arranged on the first level, the shells of Santiago, which indicate its relationship with the Camino de Santiago.

Capilla do São José

The São José Chapel is located in Campo Camilo Castelo Branco and was rebuilt in the 18th century. Its facade has a simple appearance and consists of a portal and three windows. In the upper right part of the facade there is a beautiful bell tower composed of two bodies.

Capilla de São Bento da Buraquinha

The chapel of São Bento da Buraquinha is located at the end of Rua Cândido dos Reis and is a 17th century construction. This chapel has plastered walls except for the corners, which have masonry blocks. It has a very simple ornamentation of geometric shapes.

Gastronomy

The gastronomy of the town of Barcelos is closely linked to the roasted rooster, and there is even a festival in its honor. Traditional dishes such as rockets, sarrabulho potatoes, stone-grilled octopus, roasted and grilled bacalhau, pica arroz piso and green soup also stand out.
