Get to know Azambuja

The town of Azambuja, seat of the municipality, was integrated years ago within the metropolitan area of Lisbon but is now part of the Urban Community of Lezería do Tejo.

Many historians conclude that Azambuja already existed in Roman times, which was invaded by the Arabs in the year 711 when they called it Azanbujâ ”olivera brava”. Years later it was called a free village until the 13th century and, in 1296, D. Dinis, known as King Labrador, ordered the sowing of all the surrounding lands.
