Get to know Alhandra

The village of Alhandra is part of Vila Franca de Xira. This small parish on the banks of the Tagus River is perfect to rest after a hard stage.

It has a nice promenade where you can enjoy the river and the quiet atmosphere of the village. This village has seen the birth of one of the most important admirals of the Portuguese navy, Alfonso de Alburquerque, also known as the Caesar of the East or the Lion of the Seas.

How to get there

Getting to the municipality of Alhandra is very easy, as it is close to Lisbon. The road to follow from Lisbon is the E1 northbound. If you are coming from further down and do not want to go through Lisbon the best option is to take the A13, cross the Tagus on the A10 and finally take the E1.

You can arrive by train or by bus from the capital with bus 2, 3, 21, 48.

Gastronomy

In the gastronomy of Alhandra we can find meals with any type of product, due to the proximity of the river and the mountains. Highlights: fish soups, ensopado de enguias e de borrego, sável com açorda de ovas, linguadinhos e enguias fritas and sopa de linguados. It is also advisable to try the cod and chicken, as they have special ways of cooking them, in addition to the ”bravas” meat stews.
