The mummies excavated in the town of Albergaria were found at the end of the 19th century, but could not be opened to the public until 2015, the year in which their full restoration was completed.

The remains found in these excavations date back more than 6000 years and were located in the middle of the city, so it is considered the most exceptional archaeological site in all of Portugal thanks to its strong conservation. They are known as “Mámoas do Taco” and were excavated by order of the archaeologist Pedro Sobral de Carvalho.

In addition to the tumuli found, inscriptions appeared on them as a set of concentric semicircles and others made by the technique of drilling.

Pelourinhos de Angeja y Frossos

The “Pelourinhos” in Portugal represent small statues built in homage to local heroes or wealthy people, although others were erected with the purpose of exposing criminals or thieves who were captured before the people. The Pelourinhos of Angeja and Frossos were declared of Cultural Interest in 1933.

The Pelourinho of Angeja was erected in 1902 on two stairways. The shaft of the column has a ring-shaped capital on which rests a square block topped by frieze decorated with the national arms and the Cross of Christ.

The Pelourinho de Frossos was moved to the city center in 1963, giving its name to the street where it is located. It stands on a total of three fairly high staircases and is a composition that stands out for its simplicity.
