Across mount Areo and crossing a few rivers, we will get closer and closer to Avilés, whose
historical centre was declared site of artistic and monumental interest. Apart from the many
religious and civil buildings, Avilés stands out for its streets full of colonnades that invite
us to wander around and to let beauty take us away. Furthermore, we can visit some of the
largest beaches in the region, sucha as Sablón or Bayas and Salinas.
Recommendation Pilgrim
With a practically flat profile, this stage will be like a walk to the shores of the Gijón estuary. The only drawback is the constant heavy presence of the highway. This stage presents no difficulties for cyclists or people with reduced mobility.

Itinerary
Km 0 ‧ Gijón
We get ready to leave Gijón, so we head towards the seaside promenade and follow
Rodríguez San Pedro avenue all the way to Padre Máximo circus. Following the marks and
across Mariano Pola, Galicia and República Argentina avenues, we reach road AS-19,
which will lead the way for a while.
We continue on the same road, cross the rail tracks
and keep going until we find some other rail tracks, which we cross underneath. Just
before a roundabout, we take a path to our right-hand side that leads to a smaller road.
We will continue until we reach Veriña and keep walking towards Poago. Over some new
rail tracks, we start the climb to mount Areo, passing by the villages of Poago y Pavierna.
We take a diversion towards the dolmen of San Pablo and, a little farther, we descend
Carreño valley to road CE-6, which we cross. Some 500 metres later, take a new diversion
to road AS-326 and continue until we reach a big roundabout, where we must turn right
towards another roundabout and take a path until we join road AS-19 again.
Km 16,9 ‧ Tabaza
Along a lengthy stretch, passing by Tabaza, we reach a football pitch and cross the rail
tracks to continue next to Avilés estuary. We reach an urban park, from where we have to
go up to road AS-238 by a pedestrian footbridge and continue along Marqués de Suances
avenue until it becomes Cervantes avenue. We will soon reach the city of Avilés, in the
maritime heart of the region and declared Historic-Artistic Site. Apart from its unique old
town full of colonnades, this area features one of the largest dune areas, surrounded by
astonishing cliffs and dream beaches.
