Get to know Santander

The city of Santander is within the ranking of the largest cities in Spain. It is worth mentioning that in addition to collecting half of the population residing in the entire province of Cantabria, in summer its population doubles thanks to the tourist influence.

It is advisable that the pilgrim spend time to walk the streets and know the varied cuisine of the city.

How to get there

The city of Santander is well connected with the outside, has major roads such as the A-67 that communicates Santander with Venta de Baños, the S-10 that communicates with San Salvador, the S-20 communicates Bezana with La Albericia, the S-30 communicates Cacicedo with La Albericia and the A-8 linking A Coruña with the entire northern peninsular.

It also has maritime transport, although only has a line linking Santander with the British town of Plymouth. In addition the city has an airport about 5 km away, this offers regular lines to Madrid, Paris, Barcelona, Brussels, London, Bergamo, Palma de Mallorca, Beauvais, Rome, Seville, Tenerife, Valencia, Alicante, Venice and Menorca

What to see

Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción

The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption is a building listed as a cathedral since 1754 and declared of Cultural Interest in 1931. It consists of an emblematic building whose construction dates back to the fourteenth century. It was from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries when different reforms were carried out. But these reforms lasted only until 1941 when a fire invaded Santander. It was then when a transept was added to the chancel in the center of which rises an octagonal dome over gallonado trumpets. The aisles are extended to a Gothic ambulatory that surrounds the presbytery and the altar and encompasses two chapels in honor of the Virgin of the Battles and St. Matthias.

The Protestant cemetery was built on the outskirts of Santander, specifically in the neighborhood of Cazoña. This cemetery was enabled to serve as burial for the British who worked in the city as engineers, technicians and traders, since they, as Protestants, could not be buried in a Catholic cemetery because it was considered “sacred ground.

The Cabo Mayor Lighthouse Art Center emerged as a cultural project of the Port Authority of the city of Santander thanks to an agreement made with the Sanz-Vilar family. The purpose of this center is for visitors to enjoy the facilities of the Cabo Lighthouse and the collections of art and objects related to the sea that are exhibited there, all of which were put together by the artists Eduardo Sanz and Isabel Villar.

This interpretation center is mainly formed by the Cathedral of the Assumption, the Church of Christ, the Cloister and the Bell Tower that form a set declared a National Monument in 1931. From here, visits are offered to the tower room where you can observe choir books, paintings, parchments, ornamental pieces, archaeological remains, etc. The visit to this space also offers the possibility of enjoying a spectacular panoramic view of the city from the top of the bell tower.

Dique de Gamazo

The Gamazo Dam, with a surface area of 3,382 m2 with a rectangular floor plan, is semicircular in shape and was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in 2001. It has an engine house and an access gate that was forged in 1907 in a modernist style. Its construction was a challenge for the technical development of the time due to the many structural and financial obstacles that had to be overcome.

This lighthouse is located in the northwest corner of Santander, presiding over the entrance to the bay of the city and is undoubtedly one of the most representative works of Santander.

The space in which the lighthouse is located forms an area of great length in which the promontories of Cabo Mayor and Cabo Menor stand out. The configuration of this area is marked by beaches, cliffs and a quite rugged relief.

The areas of Cabo Mayor and Cabo Menor have a wide variety of functions and uses: to guide boats thanks to the lighthouse, to function as a defensive enclave, racecourse, campground, public park, golf course, etc.

Funicular del Rio de la Pila

The Rio de la Pila Funicular was inaugurated in 2008 and has a route of 78 meters with four stops: Rio de la Pila, San Sebastian Street, Prado San Roque and El Regimiento soccer field. It operates from 06:00 to 00:00 and accommodates 20 people inside. Its use is free of charge.

Gran Casino

E Gran Casino was built and inaugurated in 1916 over an old casino created in 1870 which was attended by characters such as Amadeo de Saboya, Alfonso XIII, Victoria Eugenia, etc.. This present casino, however, began to combine roulette and baccarat with dances, cotillions, theatrical plays, opera, etc. Today it has a gaming room and a slot machine room, a restaurant, three dining rooms, two bars, a cafeteria and a party room as well as an exhibition hall.

Hospital de San Rafael

The Hospital de San Rafael is one of the oldest buildings in Santander still in use. Founded in the year 1791, it underwent numerous reforms in later years that resulted in a classicist type construction with a quadrangular floor plan and a central courtyard. On the inner first floor of this building there are arcades of arches and pilasters while on the upper floor there are linteled openings of various sizes. The main facade is built with ashlar masonry with nine arches that form a porch.

Hotel Real

The Hotel Real, of great luxury and belonging to the Eurostars chain, is located right in front of the Playa de los Peligros and a few minutes walk from the Palacio de la Magdalena which, by its tradition, its style, its location and its prestige has helped to increase the value of excellence with which the city of Santander counts.

The Hotel Real was built by the architect Gonzalez Riancho and opened in 1917. The building combines modernist and eclectic styles, and draws attention, both for its spectacular terrace and the white of its facades. In addition, it is one of the most luxurious hotels in Spain and has inside a thalasso of approximately 1400 square meters.

The Church of the Annunciation is a Renaissance style temple built in 1607 and declared of Cultural Interest in 1993. It has a single nave and rectangular apse with side chapels connected by semicircular arches. On its façade there is a taller central body to which are attached two lateral bodies, narrower and lower, which are joined to it by means of a stone partition. The façade is composed of three bodies, two narrower and lower and a main one where the door is located, with a semicircular entrance opening and framed by double pilasters and with a split pediment to fit the niche with the image of the Virgin. The second floor of the central body is occupied by a large rectangular architraved window surrounded by two large baroque coats of arms of the eighteenth century.

The church of the Virgen del Faro, designed by architect Jaime Carceller, has a great architectural uniqueness as its concrete vault serves as a cover. It was founded and opened for worship in 1969. However, in the year 1990, the temple was closed due to problems in its structure, reopening again in the year 2009.

The interior of the church stands out for housing the figure of Christ crucified, the work of the sculptor Jesús Otero.

Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Visitación

The Church of Our Lady of the Visitation is a neo-Gothic church attached to the convent of the same name, dating from the nineteenth century and has a single nave. The temple, which is located in Camilo Alonso Vega street, was built by the architect Joaquín Rucoba, and has on its facade a portico with five arches, large windows, pinnacles and a bell tower with two smaller side towers.

Iglesia de San Francisco

The Church of San Francisco is a Catholic temple built by Javier Gonzalez Riancho in the mid-twentieth century, being inaugurated later in 1953. Its facade is composed of a classical portico that is exempt from it with a balustrade supported by columns with Doric capitals and a triangular pediment in the upper body ornamented with pinnacles. This church also has a tower with an octagonal vaulted bell tower.

Iglesia de Santa Lucia

The Church of Santa Lucia is a temple of eclectic neo-Renaissance style that was declared of Cultural Interest in 1987. Built by A. Zabaleta in 1868, it has a rectangular floor plan with a single nave and side chapels open in arcades supported by pilasters, transept with short arms and semicircular apse. It highlights its monumental portico which is accessed by a large staircase with large columns of Ionic order.

In the interior of the same some works are still preserved as the Gothic carving of the Virgin and Child, a painting with the representation of Santa Lucia, and a Virgin of Victories.

Museo Marítimo del Cantábrico

The Cantabrian Maritime Museum is located in San Martín de Abajo Street and its origin dates back to 1886, when the Museum-Aquarium was created, promoted by scientist and researcher Augusto González de Linares. However, the current location of the museum was inaugurated in 1981.

The museum space is distributed in four sections: Marine Biology and Aquariums, Fishing Ethnography, Maritime History and Shipbuilding and Navigational Techniques.

Jardines de Piquío

The Piquío Gardens are one of the most spectacular green spaces in the city, located in the Plaza de las Brisas. They were designed by the architect Ramiro Sainz Martínez in 1925 and have a length of approximately 7000 square meters. In this area you can contemplate different tree species such as palm trees, eucalyptus, yuccas, etc. From these gardens, located on a hill, you have incredible views of the Sardinero beach.

La locomotora Peñacastillo y la locomotora Revilla

Both locomotives, Peñacastillo and Revilla, are in the Cantabrian Railway Museum, founded by the Association of Friends of the Railway of Cantabria, and both were the work of Krauss. Specifically, the Peñacastillo locomotive has become historical, was built in Germany in 1912 and is of type 030T. On the other hand, the Revilla locomotive is also part of the scientific and technical heritage of the region, as it was built in 1907 in Germany and is of the 020WT type.

Mercado del Este

The Eastern Market is a market built between 1839 and 1842 occupying two of the blocks of the Ensanche de Santander and was proclaimed of Cultural Interest in 1986. It is considered one of the first examples of galleries built for commercial use because it is arranged as a network of roads laid out in a grid pattern as covered streets.

In 2000, a demolition and subsequent reconstruction (preserving few original elements) of the Market was carried out. Today it houses several businesses related to the service sector. In it are, in addition to a tourist information office, some cafes, stores of various kinds (gifts, florist, delicatessen products, etc.) and the Museum of Prehistory and Archeology of Cantabria.

The MAS, founded in 1908, began as a generalist museum and continued as a regional art museum. Today it is a contemporary art museum with international projection whose mission is the dissemination of the latest currents of thought, specializing in modern and contemporary art.

It has a permanent exhibition that includes sculptures, sound works, paintings, videos, installations… As well as a large number of temporary exhibitions per year.

Museo de Prehistoria y arqueología

Located on the first floor of the East Market of Santander, the Market of Prehistory and Archaeology has almost 2,000 m2 of extension. Declared an Asset of Cultural Interest, it was restored in 1998. This museum has an exhibition that aims to explain the different ways of life in the Prehistory and History of Cantabria. It houses abundant audiovisual and interactive media, digital posters, scenographies…

The Wall Interpretation Center aims to show the last stretch of the foral wall of Santander. It explains the evolution of the city through the archaeological remains found in the area: ceramics, tiled streets and structures of ancient towers that belonged to the wealthiest families of the town.

Museo del agua

The Water Museum, located in Pronillo (Santander), explains the history of water supply to the city from 1874 to the present day. In addition, the museum invites you to learn how the water cycle unfolds, from the moment it is obtained from the mountains in the interior of Santander until it is returned to the Cantabrian Sea.

Palacio de la Riva

The Palacio de la Riva is declared an Asset of Cultural Interest and is composed of a set that includes the tower, the walls and the monument of the noble house. Fernando de la Riva reformed the building in the mid-sixteenth century by attaching the medieval tower to a two-story horizontal body with an open facade with a portico of two segmental arches that is divided by a central column decorated with a Corinthian capital.

At present it is the headquarters of the Santander Creativa Foundation.

Located on the Magdalena Peninsula, the Palace and its gardens were built with the purpose of being used by Alfonso XIII starting the works in 1909 and finishing in 1911. The palace building has two main entrances, the northern one with a portico and the southern one with a staircase. The different bodies that make up the palace, including the tower, have numerous openings that bring light to the building. Inside, the main staircase and the Adam style hall stand out. It is decorated by a collection of furniture, photographs and paintings of the time among which artists such as Sorolla, Sotomayor …

The Sardinero Beach is considered the best known beach in the Community of Cantabria as it has a multitude of services and Blue Flag. It extends approximately 330 meters in length although it is considered an urban beach.

Bateria de San Pedro

The Battery of San Pedro del Mar was built around the hermitage of the same name in 1763, and was designed by Joaquín del Pino. In the year 1807 the battery-artillery underwent a reform and, later, around the year 1874, due to the Carlist wars, the battery was connected by means of trenches with the fountains of La Cabanera and other places that closed the isthmus of the city.

Castillo de la Corbanera

The Corbanera Castle is an ancient fortification built in 1847 in order to fight and protect the city against the Carlist Wars. It consists of a main tower located in the center, surrounded by a circular wall supported by four towers strategically located at the cardinal points. The wall occupies 50 meters in diameter and was built in masonry with mortar.

Gastronomy

The traditional gastronomy of Santander includes amayuelas, morgueras, panchos, red mullet, bocartes, sea bass, sardines, squid, chachones, clams, bonito, anchovies and sea bream. In the meat section, veal, yearling, heifer and ox stand out, but it must be said that the most traditional recipes are mostly based on fish or seafood, rabas, double rosquillas, sea bass, sardines and morguera. The cocido montañés is also very typical.
