Get to know San Sebastián

San Sebastian or also known as Donostia, the official name in the language of the autonomous community to which it belongs, is the next city that the pilgrim will encounter on the pilgrimage route.

It is a city full of history and with a high cultural heritage that is mixed with its countless tourist resources and a wide gastronomic offer.

How to get there

The city of San Sebastian is served by the following regional roads GI-11, GI-21, GI-41, GI-20, GI-40 and two main highways, the AP-1 and AP-8.

Returning to the city by bus is a highly recommended option, there are numerous lines that connect the city of San Sebastian with the rest of the autonomous community and in addition, the Amara station offers international and domestic lines to major cities.

The train station also offers daily lines to cities in the Basque Country and others such as the daily line that connects with Madrid, among others.

The city’s airport offers daily flights to Madrid and Barcelona and in the summer season increases its offer as for example to Malaga and Palma de Mallorca.

What to see

Castillo de la Mota

The Castle of Santa Cruz de la Mota was built in the 12th century on Mount Urgull by King Sancho el Mayor of Navarre. Throughout the years and with the successive wars it had to be continuously rebuilt and thanks to this currently preserved inside three chapels, one of which is dedicated to Christ of the Mota and an impressive statue of the Sacred Heart of 1950.

The Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa is located in a building divided into three which was built in 1885 by José Goicoa, although each wing is the work of a different professional. Ramón Múgica was in charge of the right wing, Manuel de Urcola of the left wing and Lorenzo de Arteaga and Manuel de Urcola of the central body. At first, the interior housed the State Administration and the Palace of the Province.

In that same year of construction, a fire collapsed the building, saving only the facades and the foundation. Those in charge of rehabilitating the building were the architects Luis Aladrén and Adolfo Morales, who respected Goicoa’s original idea. The new building was completed in 1890.

El Paseo Nuevo

The Paseo Nuevo was inaugurated in 1916 and is located around Mount Urgull from the port to Salamanca Street. The most characteristic and beautiful thing that you will find, apart from the beautiful views, is the image created by the waves breaking on the promenade itself.

The Paseo Nuevo is the most beautiful promenade in the city.

Estación Funicular

The Funicular is the best way to access the tourist complex of Mount Igueldo and enjoy the views that it leaves as it flies over the city. To the surprise of many, this funicular inaugurated in 1912 is still in operation today with the same equipment and vehicles as at that time.

Estación Funicular

Hotel Maria Cristina

The Hotel Maria Cristina built in 1920 by Charles Mewes, with 136 rooms, quickly became the meeting point for royalty and aristocracy to enjoy the sun and bathe in the waters of the Concha beach.

This building is considered the jewel of San Sebastian as during the San Sebastian Film Festival it hosts many celebrities from around the world such as Woody Allen, Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts.

Iglesia de San Vicente

The Church of San Vicente, in Basque Gothic style, is the oldest temple in the city built in the sixteenth century and declared of Cultural Interest in 1984. Over time it underwent numerous modifications and additions such as the Baroque portico, the sacristy, the choir staircase, a baptistery on the eastern facade, the atrium and the southern door. In addition to this, four rose windows were created on the facades.

The interior has a floor plan with three naves, the central one being the highest, and an octagonal apse covered by ribbed vaults supported on the inside by circular core columns with small columns attached and supported by buttresses. The most remarkable of the interior decoration is the High Altarpiece considered one of the most beautiful of the Roman period.

The people who were baptized in the church of San Vicente are known as “koxkeros”, thanks to the protruding stones of the temple that are called “koxka” in Euskera.

Iglesia de San Vicente

Isla de Santa Clara

The island of Santa Clara is located in the middle of the Concha Bay where the lizard lives among others. This body houses a pier and a small beach that despite its limited 30 meters long, has lifeguard service, showers and even a bar. The only building that is inside is the lighthouse that stands on its summit.

In summer it is connected to the port of San Sebastian by a regular boat service every half hour.

Los Cubos de Kursaal

The Kursaal Cubes is an extraordinary building designed by the renowned architect Rafael Moneo. The structure presents two glass cubes with which it is intended to preserve the geography and highlight the harmony between the artificial and natural world.

This palace has the Mies van der Rohe Contemporary Architecture Award and is the result of a project that Donostia and Gipuzkoa dreamed of to be able to host any type of event in this impressive conference center.

Museo de Ciencia Eureka

The Eureka Science Museum aims to complement the world of science and technology that can be accessed by audiences of all ages and perform different stimulating activities.

This center houses the permanent exhibition of HIPATIA, which has more than one hundred and sixty interactive modules spread over eight thematic rooms. It also highlights its planetarium in which astronomy is shown as well as immersive cinema projections.

Inside, there is also a Foucault pendulum as well as a variety of animations, shows and roller coaster simulators. In the outdoor gardens you can see a set of models corresponding to heritage buildings of Gipuzkoa and a mini botanical garden.

Palacio de Aiete

The Aiete Palace is a beautiful residential complex declared of Cultural Interest consisting of the palace and its gardens which was built at the request of the Dukes of Bailen in 1878 thanks to the architect Adolfo Ombrecht.

At present inside the palace is the House of Peace and Human Rights and in the northern part of the gardens was erected a new building that houses the House of Culture.

Palacio de Miramar y jardines

The Queen Anne English cottage style Miramar Palace faces the beaches of the Bay and Santa Clara Island and was the summer resort of the Royal Family.

It is built with brick, sandstone and half-timbering and has around it large gardens designed by Pierre Ducasse. Inside it currently hosts the Summer Courses of the University of the Basque Country and is the headquarters of the Higher Music Center of the Basque Country.

Palacio de Miramar y jardines

Palacio del Duque de Mandas

The Palace of the Duke of Mandas is located in the park of Cristina Enea and was the main residence of the Duke of Mandas, but now houses the headquarters of the Environmental Resources Center. It is noteworthy that both the renovation of the facade and the interior raised a great controversy.

Parque de Atracciones del Monte Igueldo

The Parque de Atracciones del Monte Igueldo is located on the Paseo del Faro in San Sebastian and has a funicular to climb to La Farola and so it is also possible to ride any of its attractions: the maze, the carousel, the roller coaster, bumper cars, etc.. And you can even ride on the back of a pony, enter the House of Terror or enjoy the trampolines.

In addition to all these attractions, the little ones can participate in the many games of skill: remote-controlled trucks, the bowling alley, turtle races, western shooting, etc.

Museo Cemento Rezola

The Rezola Cement Museum is located in a building that until 2000 functioned as a cement factory. When the building was renovated as a museum, the entire original structure was respected, so that today it still has a facade completely covered with cement mortar and the three interior rooms where the auditorium was installed to host conferences and meetings, the permanent exhibition hall that offers a tour of the world of cement and the temporary exhibition area in the center of the building.

This museum, in addition to explaining the purpose and uses of cement, also aims to pay tribute to the founders of the factory and pay tribute to the men and women who have contributed to making this company one of the most important in the country in the sector.

Playa de La Concha

La Concha Beach is the main image of San Sebastian since besides being the most beautiful it is the most central of the city and stretches for a mile of white sand. It is not only the best beach in the Bay of Biscay but is considered one of the best urban beaches in Europe.

All along the bay different elements stand out such as the Concha Railing for its ornamentation, the lampposts that serve as awards in the Film Festival, the area of “the Clocks”, the area of La Perla, etc.. But what stands out the most is the Santa Clara Island located in the bay.

Puente de María Cristina

The Maria Cristina Bridge joins both sides of the river and has four monumental obelisks at both entrances crowned by sculptural groups. Before the current bridge was inaugurated on January 20, 1905, there was a provisional wooden footbridge. This date coincides with the feast of St. Sebastian.

Tabakalera

The Tabakalera is a building that received this name for having housed the tobacco factory of Donostia from 1913 to 2003. Since that year the City Council of San Sebastian, the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa and the Basque Government became owners of the building and reconverted it into the current international center of culture.

From 2011 to 2015 this building was under continuous remodeling in order to become a center for contemporary culture. To this end, the building was opened to the city by removing fences and surrounding walls and a glass prism was created in order to bring more light and visibility to the building.

Biblioteca Koldo Mitxelena

The Koldo Mitxelena Kulturunea is a building that houses the library headquarters of the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa. It is currently considered one of the best libraries of humanities and Basque culture, which is divided into two rooms with exhibitions, the first is focused on the visual arts and the second is a multipurpose space where you can find exhibitions focused on current topics.

Biblioteca Koldo Mitxelena

La Perla

La Perla is located on the beach of La Concha and is part of the most symbolic buildings of San Sebastian belonging to the ”Belle Époque”. At first the building was made of wood until 1912 when it was replaced and refurbished to give it the appearance we see today.

This building was the summer resort of the Royal House over a century ago. Currently the building houses a Thalasso-Sport center and taking advantage of the sea water they offer therapeutic treatments inside.

Catedral del Buen Pastor

The Cathedral of the Good Shepherd of San Sebastian is located in the Ensanche de Amara since 1897, when it was inaugurated. It was built by Manuel Echave following the template of the Germanic Gothic cathedrals, although over the years it underwent numerous reconstructions.

As for its structure, it is distributed around a Latin cross plan divided into three naves topped by a presbytery. It stands out at the top of its naves the multiple stained glass windows made by Juan Bautista representing the Twelve Apostles in the company of Jesus and Mary.

Peine del Viento

The Wind Comb of 1977 is one of the most recognized works of the author Eduardo Chillida composed of pink granite terraces and 3 pieces of steel on the stony areas of the sea.

The most spectacular thing about this construction is that thanks to its system of tubes, the air driven by the waves of the sea comes to the surface emitting a very peculiar sound, in addition it also expels the sprayed water, hence its name.

Teatro Victoria Eugenia

The Victoria Eugenia Theater is located in a 1912 building where the main cultural events of the city take place. It houses space for 910 people in the main hall and has other more multipurpose rooms related to the performing arts.

It should be noted that this theater was built at the same time as the Hotel Maria Cristina and the Okendo gardens, resulting in a public space of monumental character. The plot of the theater is rectangular in shape and extends over 2,460 m2.

Museo Chillida

The Chillida-Leku Museum was created by Eduardo Chillida and his wife Pilar Belzunce with the aim of exhibiting their sculptures. It is located on the Zabalaga estate, which has a farmhouse that was later converted into a museum. This indoor and outdoor museum shows the evolution and trajectory of the author during 50 years divided the collection into three defined areas:

The Constitution Square is located in the historic center of the city of San Sebastian. Until the first half of the twentieth century this square was known as “City Hall Square”, as it was the seat of the same.

Today this square is witness to many of the important festivals held in the city, such as the raising and lowering of the flag on January 20, the fair on the day of St. Thomas …

As a curiosity it is worth noting that before having the character of square, this was used as a bullring, a feature that can be seen in the numbers of the balconies of the buildings that surround it.

Lourdes Txiki

Its history dates back to 1903, when a congregation of Dominican friars fled from France and settled in the city in a farm called ”La mallorquina”. A year later this group makes a replica of the caves of Lourdes, which will be known as Lourdes Txiki.

The structure we see today is from 1933 when a congregation of Capuchins renovated the grotto. Every February 11 a mass is celebrated in her honor, coinciding with the feast of Lourdes.

Aquarium

The Aquarium is located inside a building built in 1928 divided into two floors which are completely dedicated to the marine flora and fauna of Gipuzkoa. Highlights of this collection include the skeleton of a right whale, the 360-degree tunnel and the tropical species that can be observed there.

This space is not only an aquarium but also a museum, so it has an exhibition that explains topics related to the sea, such as maritime trade, fishing, Basque whalers, etc.

Basílica de Santa María del Coro

The Basilica of Santa Maria was built in the eighteenth century and stands out thanks to its baroque facade with Churrigueresque, Gothic and neoclassical elements. In this facade is a large sculpture of St. Sebastian Martyr and inside the church highlights carvings such as the one located in the central street of the altarpiece venerating the Virgin of the Choir.

Gastronomy

The products that stand out are asparagus, tomatoes, mushrooms, chili peppers, beans, Txangurro, Iberian ham, black pudding, cabbage, zizas, perretxikos, peppers, varinas, sardines, berdel, elvers and game meats. The most traditional recipes are baked spider crab, hake kokotxas in green sauce, koxkera or donostierra hake, clams in seafood sauce, baby squid in its ink, roasted sea bream and eels from Aguinaga. Every meal should be accompanied by a good cider or Txakoli, so famous in the area. Desserts include: sheep’s milk curd, apples in compote or baked apples, walnuts with cheese or in Intxaursalsa and chestnuts.
