Information

Get to know Markina-Xemein

The town of Markina-Xemein is fortunate to have corners with a lot of charm and historical value, these have been recovered and saved from disappearing such as trails that in ancient times were easement roads or walkways but now have been rebuilt for the enjoyment of visitors to the area.

Location

How to get there

Access to the town of Markina-Xemein is somewhat complicated by the fact that the area is poorly communicated, since only secondary roads such as the BI-633, BI-3405, BI-3443, BI-2636 and BI-4404 are close by, these connecting with the nearest surrounding areas such as Ondárroa, Lequeitio, Lea, Aulestia and Elgóibar. In the latter you can connect with the AP-8 freeway and connect easily with the most important cities in the northern half of the peninsula.

In the village there is no train station and there is no railway line that has a stop, there are only a few bus lines that allow you to get from Bilbao, Ermua, Ondarroa, Durango and Lekeitio.

The gastronomy of Markina-Xemein offers a wide variety of traditional products such as grilled or roasted hake or monkfish, bonito stew with potatoes, squid in its ink and kokotxas in green sauce. The most outstanding meat is the grilled veal, always accompanied by local products such as tomatoes, peppers and beans. Special mention should be made of Idiazábal cheese, which has its own denomination of origin, as well as the famous Txakoli wine from Vizcaya.
