How to get there
Thanks to the Atlantic highway and freeway, A-8 and AP-8, the city is perfectly connected with the north of the country since these roads connect Irun with Lugo and also, the AP-68 connects Aragon with the Basque Country and the national roads N-634 and N-637 connect San Sebastian with Santiago de Compostela.

What to see
Casas Americanas
This is a social housing complex built in 1964 by three young architects: Rufino Basañez, E. Argárate and J. Larrea. The “houses of the Americans” stand out for their architectural quality, originality and innovation, and are divided into three blocks that combine volumetric composition, duplex housing and the use of color. The whole is filled with fullness with the sculptural exterior staircase ends up giving meaning to the entire facade.

Casilda de Iturrizar
The park known as Casilda de Iturrizar, is a park opened in 1920 after Doña Casilda gave the land to the City Council of Bilbao and that is why one of the monuments erected in the park is in her honor. It is a bronze bust of the aforementioned patron saint resting on a beautifully ornamented column that is located in the center of the pond of the Paseo de la Pergola, the work of Agustín Querol.

Catedral de Santiago
The Cathedral of Santiago de Bilbao is a temple built in the fifteenth century in Gothic style except for its facade and tower, which are neo-Gothic style. Chalet Allende
The Chalet Allende, from the 1910s, was built by architect Leonardo Rucabado at the request of Luis Allende, and is the only example still standing of the luxurious bourgeois houses that had been built in the residential area of Indautxu. Edificio de la Sociedad Bilbaína
The building of the Sociedad Bilbaína, declared an Asset of Cultural Interest, houses a sports club of English influence, founded in 1839. It is a men’s club, and only men can become members. However, the interior of the building has other rooms dedicated to leisure, such as restaurants, which anyone, regardless of sex, can enter. The building also houses a private library-hemerotheque, which is one of the most important in Spain, with more than 40,000 volumes.

Puente de Vizcaya
The Bizkaia Bridge, also known as the Hanging Bridge, was designed by Alberto Palacio y Elissague and inaugurated on July 28, 1893. Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2006, the Bizkaia Bridge became the first ferry bridge to be built with a metal structure.
The Suspension Bridge has a structure made up of four iron towers 61 meters high, connected to each other by a crossbeam of about 160 meters, located 45 meters above sea level. It is also the junction point between Portugalete and Getxo, where the Bilbao estuary widens to join the sea and stands out for being painted “Vena Rojo Somorrostro”, a color that matches the mining industry in the area.

Estación Atxuri
Atxuri station, inaugurated in 1912, was built by the architect Manuel María de Smith. Unlike other more industrialized train stations, this one presents a new and original architecture, combining the mountain and Basque styles.
At the entrance of the station, the visitor can see several coats of arms belonging to the three provinces of the Basque Country: Bizkaia, Gipuzkoa and Alava, in addition to the chains belonging to the coat of arms of Navarre. This fact is due to the fact that the company that managed the station in Atxuri, called Ferrocarriles Vascongados, had the intention of also acquiring the Ferrocarril Vasco-Navarro, something that in the end was not carried out.

Estación de La Concordia
The Concordia Station was inaugurated in 1902 and is located parallel to the estuary. This station, which connects Santander with Bilbao, stands out for its facade with a certain style focused on romanticism, leaving aside the industrial stereotype that follows the other stations of the city of Bilbao.
The rest of the building has a modernist style characterized by elements such as ceramics, wrought iron or glass. In addition, from the station you can contemplate wonderful panoramic views over the estuary, making it one of the best viewpoints of the city.

Sede del banco BBVA
The building that currently houses the BBVA Bank was the old Banco de Comercio de Bilbao, built in 1912 by Pedro Guimón. It is located on Gran Vía street D. Diego López de Haro and has a clear classical style. In addition, the building has three facades and two of them, Gran Vía and Alameda, have Corinthian columns. In the building there is a small temple in honor of the god Mercury.

Hotel Carlton
The renowned Carlton Hotel, consists of a historic building built in 1926 and declared an Architectural, Historical, Artistic and Cultural Monument thanks to its majesty. Today it is completely renovated and cared for. It highlights its facade to three streets.

Iglesia del Sagrado Corazón
A work of José María Basterra, this is a neo-Gothic style church built in brick and stone at the end of the 19th century and decorated inside with Byzantine ornamentation. It is decorated inside with Byzantine ornamentation.
At the end of the last century the original pinnacles of the towers were removed due to the risk of collapse, and the spectacular facade was cleaned. Today it houses the headquarters of the Society of Jesus.

Iglesia San Vicente Mártir de Abando

Museo Guggenheim
The Guggenheim Museum is considered the best building of the second half of the twentieth century and opened in 1997. The design of the museum was the work of American architect Frank Gehry, who, after visiting Bilbao, was clear where he wanted to locate the museum. The site of the work would be the grounds of the former Compañía de Maderas, specifically, the museum would be located on the left side of the estuary. The structure and design of the museum represent, according to the architect, a ship anchored on the banks of the Nervión River.
Thus, the museum is located on the Abandoibarra promenade, presided over by two large sculptures. The first is a sculpture of a spider, the work of Louise Borgoise, and the second represents a twelve-meter-high floral dog, the work of Jeff Koons.

Basílica de la Virgen Begoña
In Gothic style and built in the early sixteenth century by Sancho Martínez de Arego, the Basilica of the Virgin of Begoña is a basilica temple with three naves, without transept, covered with ribbed vaults. The present facade and tower were built by José María Basterra between 1902 and 1907, as well as the sacristy, which was remodeled between 1900 and 1903. A restoration between 1993 and 1994 was carried out to restore the stonework and refurbish the clock, carillon and bells. It stands out for its interior image of the Virgin of Begoña, also known as “Amatxo”. Thousands of pilgrims from the Camino come to this basilica.

Palacio Chávarri
The Chávarri Palace was designed by architect Paul Hankar in 1889 and today houses the headquarters of the Government Delegation in Vizcaya.
This palace was the residence of the businessman Victor Chávarri, Marquis of Triano and is one of the most emblematic buildings of the city of Bilbao.
From the palace highlights its facade, of great uniqueness, since it presents a curious colorful and its windows are arranged differently. In addition, it has a fantastic roof.

Palacio Euskalduna
The Euskalduna Palace is one of the main symbols of the Bilbao of the XXI century built in 1999 by Federico Soriano and Dolores Palacios. They wanted to give it the image of a ship emerging from a dock where the Euskalduna shipyard was located. The Palace won the Enric Miralles Award 2001 at the VI Biennial of Spanish Architecture.
Every year it offers numerous economic-business, institutional, social and cultural activities. It hosts the ABAO Opera Season, one of the most relevant and prestigious in Spain and the European Continent, and is also home to the Bilbao Orkestra Sinfonikoa, a magnificent musical institution that gave its first concert in 1922.

Palacio Foral
The Palacio Foral of Bilbao was built in 1900 in an eclectic, baroque and medieval style by the architect Luis Aladrén. This building reflects the bourgeois mentality of wanting to emphasize their power with solid and majestic buildings. Its halls show a great decorative richness as well as an interesting collection of works of art.

Palacio Gortázar
The Gortázar Palace, in baroque style, is located next to the Plaza Nueva and dates from the eighteenth century. This building was commissioned by Domingo Martín de Gortázar y Guendica on a part of the property where his parents lived and, on its façade, a family coat of arms stands out.
According to accounts of the time, the Gortázar family, like many other wealthy families in Bilbao, modernized their palace, turning their residential area into one of the most luxurious areas of the city at that time.

Palacio Olabarri
The Olabarri Palace, designed by architect Julian de Zubizarreta in 1894, is one of the few examples that can be seen today of the mansions built in the area of Campo Volatin, between the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. The mansion was built to house José María de Olabarri, an important business figure of the time, and today it is the headquarters of the Bilbao Port Authority.
In terms of its architecture, the mansion shows clear signs of English and French trends.

Plaza Nueva
This square, marked by its neoclassical architectural values, was inaugurated in 1851, after a very long and complicated construction period that lasted sixty-five years. This square has a great urban atmosphere at any time of the day, because in its surroundings are arranged a variety of restaurants and bars, thus maintaining the animation throughout the day.
In addition, in the Plaza Nueva, a market is held on Sundays, which is attended by all types of public, including collectors.

Rascacielos de la calle Bailén
The Bailén Street skyscraper is of great value, as it was the first building in Bilbao to exceed a height of forty meters. The building was designed by Manuel I. Galíndez around 1946 as a group of offices in two different bodies, a lower one connecting with the historic buildings of the Naja and a higher one forming the top of the set. The facade of the skyscraper stands out for its rationalism, disregarding any ornamental or superfluous motifs.

Kiosko Arenal
This work, inspired by the shape of a shell and located in the historic center of Bilbao, was designed by architect Pedro Ispizua, a native of Bermeo. In the Kiosko Arenal, with a circular shape and a cantilevered roof, the graphic marks of the author, a lover of artistic drawing, can be seen. The work shows a great expressionism and private events, concerts, etc. are held there.

Iglesia de San Antón
The Church of San Antón is considered one of the most characteristic churches of the city by the fact of being portrayed, along with the bridge that accompanies it, in the coat of arms of the city. The present temple was built between 1546 and 1548 over a primitive church and is Gothic in style except for its Renaissance façade and its Baroque bell tower. Inside you can see works by Luisa Paret, Manuel Losada or even the plateresque altarpiece by Beaugrant. Remains of the primitive church are found in the part of the altar and in the chancel.

Teatro Campos Elíseos
It is a modernist building listed as a Historic-Artistic Monument and designed by the architect Alfredo Acebal in 1902. It stands out especially for its Art Nouveau facade, designed by the French-Basque decorator Jean Batiste Darroguy. It underwent a restoration process in 2010 and today houses 800 rooms with state-of-the-art technical and scenographic features.

Estación Abando
Abando Station, also known as Estación del Norte, is located at one end of the Plaza Circular and is considered the main transport interchange of the city. Universidad de Deusto
The University of Deusto was built in 1886 by the Society of Jesus and was, at that time, one of the largest buildings in the city. Casa Lezama

Casa Montero
The Montero House is the only example of modernism in the city of Bilbao and its use is limited to residential housing area. It stands on the street Alameda Recalde and, among the inhabitants, is known as La Casa Gaudí, because its appearance is very reminiscent of the buildings designed by the famous Catalan architect. It was built in 1904 by the architect Luis Aladrén and declared a Historic-Artistic Monument.
