The small town of Santo Domingo de la Calzada has emerged by and for the Camino de Santiago, all its leisure and economic activity is related to the Jacobean route, so it has been growing as the French Way did.
At present the town retains an important historical heritage, as well as countless legends and miracles, a fact that today allows the town’s cathedral is the only one that allows access to animals.

How to get there
The town of Santo Domingo de la Calzada is well connected by road, the main way to get there is by bus. Ayuntamiento
The Council Chamber was moved from the Plaza del Santo to the upper part of the arcades of the Plaza de España at the beginning of the 18th century. After the construction of this chamber, the building was extended until it became what we see today, a baroque style building with a rectangular floor plan and two floors.

Catedral
The Cathedral of Santo Domingo de la Calzada was built in the year 1158, in order to house the remains of one of the most famous and venerated saints on the Camino de Santiago, the same one who gives his name to the town, Santo Domingo de la Calzada. He died in 1109.

Ermita del Puente
The Ermita del Puente was built in 1917 thanks to a private donation as a tribute to the saint. The temple has a neo-Romanesque style rectangular plan, with walls built in ashlar and brick, gabled roof and topped with a small belfry.

The Casa de Trastámara is located in the Calle Mayor, on the same route of the Camino de Santiago and was proclaimed a Historic Monument (BIC) in 1983.

Nowadays it is still called “Casa Trastámara”, this name was acquired because this was the main residence of King Enrique de Trastámara. It was also the place where he died in 1379.

Plaza del Santo
The Plaza del Santo is located in front of the Cathedral in the center of the Old Town. This square housed the most important institutions: the Pilgrims’ Hospital, the Cathedral and the old City Hall, also the jail.

Casa de la Cofradía del Santo
The Casa de la Cofradía del Santo is a Renaissance building from the 16th century, located in Calle Mayor. It was built by the Samaniego family and renovated in the 18th century by the Marquis of Ciriñuela.
In 1968 it began to function as a Pilgrims’ Hostel as well as the headquarters of the Brotherhood of the Saint, the oldest brotherhood of the Camino de Santiago.

The House of Lorenzo de Tejada has the consideration of pazo and is located on Main Street, has large dimensions and is also known as the House of the Lords of Cirujeda.

Casa del Alcalde Martínez de Pisón
The House of Mayor Martínez de Pisón was built in 1633 and is located in the last section of Main Street. It is worth mentioning the coat of arms on its main facade. After the vestibule, the second floor is accessed by a wide staircase that once had its own dome, destroyed in a fire. What stands out most in this baroque building is the beautiful hall that occupies the entire facade, with three balconies overlooking the street.

The Casa del Marqués de la Ensenada was built in the 18th century and has a baroque style. The pieces that stand out most are the coats of arms, military and marine emblems and the Maltese and Calatrava crosses.
The Marquis de la Ensenada was a famous politician from La Rioja, originally from the neighboring town of Hervías in 1702 and brother of the wife of Salcedo Somovilla, owner of the house.

Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Plaza
The chapel stands on the south side of the Plaza del Santo. In 1487 the stonemasons Sancho and Pedro Gil built two walls and changed the position of the doorway. In 1527 Master Hernando made the doors and the stonemason Yñigo made the roofs. So it went on rising, until it was completed with the current appearance in 1710. The hermitage had several destinations as it served as the first dwelling of the Cistercian nuns and was the headquarters of the Brotherhood of the Saint.

Santo Domingo de la Calzada has the most important wall in the Autonomous Community of La Rioja. In the thirteenth century a first ‘fence’ was erected in the Burgo that stretched from the so-called Barrio Viejo to the Barrio Nuevo, also including part of the Calle Mayor. But it was not until the fourteenth century the beginning of the construction of the current wall as a defensive fortification.

Vía verde del río Oja
The old railway track that linked the towns of Haro and Ezcaray, between 1956 and 1964, was renamed in 1996 by the Spanish Railway Foundation as the Oja River Greenway between the towns of Santo Domingo de la Calzada and Ezcaray.

Paseo de la Carrera
The Paseo de la Carrera was built in 1783 and, especially in summer, is very busy as it has gravel or grass paths that surround the exit of the regional road leading to Haro. The walk shows a great diversity of trees, especially chestnut trees that cover more than 1 km from the Town Hall to the Ermita de la Mesa del Santo. The walk, in addition, has since 2011 with the IX Centennial Park, expanding the places of recreation.

The current Plaza de España during the Middle Ages was the place, which on the outside of the wall, was used to establish a market in the burgh. After the extension of the wall in 1367, this space would be inside the fence and therefore protected.

Plaza de la Alameda
The Plaza de la Alameda emerged from the sixteenth century, and as it had been the last to be built was known as Plaza Nueva.
The holm oaks that populate the square recall the ancient forest in which the city grew. The city’s coat of arms shows a sickle cutting down an oak tree.

The temple suffered a fire on August 3, 1763 destroying the roof, images and doors. A year later it was completely rebuilt.

Convento de San Francisco
The convent of San Francisco has a Herrerian style, was founded in 1535 by order of the Archbishop of Zaragoza, Fray Bernardo de Fresneda.
Of the church inside the Convent of San Francisco what stands out most at first glance is the transept, where the tomb of the founder of the monument is located.
