Get to know Ponferrada
Since the Middle Ages, the city of Ponferrada has been a place of pilgrims. After the settlement of the Templars in these lands, the king gave them several lands in order to give protection to the pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela.
Ejerce as the capital of Bierzo, and since the eleventh century has been closely linked to the Jacobean route, with a great cultural and religious heritage. Two routes converge in the city, the French Way and the Winter Way, the latter being a variant that was born out of the need to avoid O Cebreiro in the harshest months of winter.

How to get there
The city of Ponferrada is well connected, the main way to access the city is by the A-6 highway linking A Coruña and Madrid, either by exit 382 or 388. It also has a bus station and train station, so there are daily connections with major cities, not only in León, but also in Galicia and the rest of Spain.
The city also has a city bus service, so getting around the city is easy and fast. The nearest airport is in León, approximately two hours away by car.

What to see
Torre del Reloj
The Clock Tower is the most characteristic icon of Ponferrada and is located on one of the gates of the medieval wall. It was built in 1567 and was originally divided into two sections, one of which housed the coat of arms of Philip II and the other the great clock. It was later in 1693 when it was added the small belfry in which today houses the bell, topped with a beautiful spire. All its construction was made of slate masonry and boulders.

Casa de los Macías
The Casa de los Macías in the baroque style of Bierzo was built in the eighteenth century in masonry materials. From its exterior highlights the facade for its decorative sobriety in which only has the coat of arms. It is currently privately owned.

Casa de los Escudos
The House of the Shields was built in the eighteenth century in baroque style by order of Don Manuel Francisco Garcia de las Llanas, being later owned by the Quiñones family and then the family of Adelino Perez Gomez. It currently belongs to the city council of Ponferrada.

Capilla Nuestra Señora del Carmen
The Chapel of Nuestra Señora del Carmen was created in 1681 by request Pascual Pérez de Quindós and his wife Isabel Crespo de Rueda. After the death of the owners, it fell into disuse so the city council decided to give it to the Discalced Carmelites to reconvert it into a hostel for pilgrims and the poor.
At present, the Latin cross floor plan and the single nave covered by a barrel vault are preserved and, inside, it has the carvings of Santa Teresa, San José and Nuestra Señora del Carmen.

Castillo de los Templarios
The Templar Castle was declared a National Historic and Artistic Monument in 1924. It is built on a small fortress found by the Order of the Temple in 1178. It was this order who decided to expand it in order to protect the Camino de Santiago.
Since 1282 it has undergone numerous reconstructions and modifications, which has caused different styles to be seen in the architectural elements.
From what is currently preserved, it is worth noting the coats of arms on the facade and coats of arms of the multiple owners who lived there.

Casa Consistorial
The Town Hall is the building built between 1692 and 1705 by the architect Pedro de Arén, which currently houses the headquarters of the town hall and other administrative offices of Ponferrada.

Museo de El Bierzo
The Museum of El Bierzo was created in 1996, in a building in the most important street of the city, Calle del Reloj. This space was created with the aim of making known the history of Ponferrada and El Bierzo from the Paleolithic to the present day.

Museo de las Cofradías de Semana Santa
The Museum of the Easter Brotherhoods was created with the aim of collecting all the artistic and cultural heritage accumulated since the first brotherhood and procession ponferradina, dating from the sixteenth century.

Museo de la Energía
The National Energy Museum, also known as ENE, was created with the purpose of informing visitors about energy-related topics. For this purpose, it has a building divided into two departments, in the first one there is the old thermal power station where it is exhibited how electricity was produced thanks to coal, and in the second one there is the central headquarters of the museum and the old Compostilla I thermal power station.
In addition to the permanent exhibitions of the departments, two alternative exhibitions related to sustainability are planned throughout the year.

From October 1 to June 30 opens Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 to 18:00 and from Monday to Thursday opens only by prior request (min 24h) for groups of minimum 5 people From July 1 to September 30 opens on Mondays from 11:30 to 16:30 and on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 11:30 to 19:00. Open on all public holidays throughout the year

Basílica de la Encina
The Basilica de la Encina, in Renaissance style, was built in 1573 by order of Juan Alvear. Regarding its structure, it has a Latin cross plan and its interior is topped with an altarpiece made of polychrome wood, where we can find the image of the Virgen de la Encina, patron saint of Bierzo. From its exterior it is worth mentioning the tower built in the seventeenth century.

The church of Santo Tomás de las Ollas, in Mozarabic style, was built in the 10th century and declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in 1931.

The structure of the temple has a completely rectangular floor plan, with two chapels on the sides of the chancel. The side chapel, completely square in plan, has diagonal buttresses at its outer corners and was built in 1700.

The Church of Santa María de Vizbayo of Romanesque style with Mozarabic traces, was declared of Cultural Interest in 1982 and is currently considered one of the oldest in El Bierzo, built in the eleventh century.

Museo de la Radio
The Radio Museum is located inside the Casa de los Escudos and was created with the purpose of showing visitors the different radio receivers of Luis del Olmo. This collection is considered one of the best known and most complete nationally, as it has a total of two hundred copies. In these specimens the chronology and evolution of the receivers can be seen, from the galena ones, through the transistors to the most modern digital radio.
In addition to the old national radios, the museum has a classroom where you can see the best foreign manufacturers such as Telefunken, Philips, Kent, Marconi, etc.
