What to see

Iglesia de Santa María la Real

The Church of Santa María la Real is so called because it was declared a sanctuary of royal protection, graced in the past with royal privileges. This is the place where, according to tradition and legend, a miracle took place: in the midst of a heavy snowstorm, while the priest was celebrating mass without any faithful in the temple, a man died of cold and said to himself: “which comes this other, with such a great storm and so fatigued, to see a little bread and wine”. It was at that moment that the host became flesh and the wine became blood.

Pallozas de O Cebreiro

The construction typology of pallozas in this municipality is typical and unique, as they are usually square with wooden walls set on slate slabs fixed to the ground by four pillars, covered by a conical roof of rye straw.

The interior of the building has a chamber without ventilation, which is used as a warehouse to preserve and safeguard the food, which can be accessed through a small door.

Monumento al gaitero

The monument to the piper is made of bronze and is located a few kilometers before reaching O Cebreiro, hiding a curious legend. This monument pays tribute to a pilgrim from Germany who, in medieval times, was lost in the mountains and managed to reach O Cebreiro, according to tradition, thanks to the sound of a bagpipe.

Molinos de O Cebreiro

O Cebreiro has several water mills, some still in operation for grinding cereals, a traditional activity that contributes to the economic and social development of the region. They are usually located in dams next to the riverbeds that cross the area. Among the most outstanding mills in the town, mention should be made of Aceña de Counavia, for its large dimensions and its location on the banks of the Navia River.

Capilla del Santo Milagro

To the right of the main altar of the Church of Santa Maria La Real, is the chapel of the Holy Miracle, which highlights the image of Santa Virgen de los Remedios. Tradition has it that she bowed her head in order to see the Holy Miracle and was thus immobilized. The image of the saint carries in one hand the pastoral ring offered to her by the Bishop of Lugo, Placido.

Gastronomy

Like most of the Galician villages, O Cebreiro also presents a wide gastronomy but, mainly, it stands out for the pork products with which the traditional Galician stew, the empanada and the desserts of walnuts, honey and chestnuts are elaborated. In addition, they have O Cebreiro cheese, which acquired the designation of origin in 1991. It is a white or yellow cheese depending on its maturity, distinguishing between fresh and cured cheese.
