Get to know Melide

Melide is the meeting point for pilgrims who come by the Primitive Way and the French Way, specifically gather in the Plaza del Convento, the most important of the village.

The town since the Middle Ages has a close relationship with the Jacobean routes, even came to be built in the fourteenth century a wall and a castle in order to protect the people and the pilgrims. The whole complex was destroyed by the irmandiñas revolts.

At present, Melide is still important not only for preserving historical heritage of great value, but also presents an excellent cuisine that forces all pilgrims to stop to eat its famous octopus “a feira”.

Capilla del Carmen

At the top of the pre-Roman castro, on the site where the castle was built in the Middle Ages, stands in 1741 the chapel of Carmen. The floor plan of the church is rectangular, with a semicircular triumphal arch. In its interior stands out the altarpiece made in 1755. In the central chapel is the beautiful image of the Virgen del Carmen, from the late eighteenth century, flanked by statues of San Ramon Nonate and San Xosé, both also from the late eighteenth century.

Museo da Terra

The building that currently houses the Museo da Terra de Melide was built around 1375 by Fernán López and Aldara González, in order to create a pilgrims’ hospital for those on their way to Santiago de Compostela who passed through the town of Melide. Subsequently, this building was subjected to a thorough repair in the early sixteenth century, as can be seen in the engraving of its facade. The expenses of such restoration were assumed by the Count of Monterrey and, that is why, in the cover we will find a coat of arms belonging to this well-known nobleman.
