Get to know Olveiroa

The town of Olveiroa is a small village in the municipality of Dumbría, which has been growing along with the Camino de Santiago. It went from having nothing, not even barely population, to offer most of the services that a pilgrim needs.

In Olveiroa the pilgrim will have to decide whether to follow the road to Fisterra or go before to Muxía, both routes are well signposted and from Muxía there is also signposted route to continue to the lighthouse of Fisterra.

How to get there

The easiest way to get there is to go to Santiago and once in the city take the AG-56 road to Brión and link up with the AC-546 to Tapia, approximately, and finally link up with the AC-441 to Baíñas.

The most recommended public transport option is to take a bus in Santiago, there are lines that connect the city with Muxía and have a stop in the village of Olveiroa.

What to see

Hórreos centenarios

Hundreds of years old and built with stone, the Hórreos de Olveiroa are among the largest and best preserved in the whole province. On the side of the same we will also find a cruceiro.

Cascada del Ézaro

It is the best known waterfall in Europe because it is the only one in the whole continent that flows directly into the sea. The water falls from a total of 40 meters high. However, the slope of the Xallas River in its final course rises to a height of 155 meters above the sea. In addition, next to it, is the viewpoint of Ézaro, which allows us to enjoy sensational views of the union between the river and the Atlantic Ocean.

Dolmen de Pedra da Arga de Regoelle

Located in the town of Regoelle, this dolmen dates back to around the third millennium BC. It is considered one of the largest in the Galician community and is located at a height of 318 meters, in what is called a “chaira” and formed by a conglomerate of pasture meadows. The state of conservation that it presents is very good since even several of the original orthostats can be observed.

Embalse da Fervenza

With an extension of 1250 hectares, this reservoir was built in 1996. As it progresses, we can locate three hydroelectric dams, the Olveira Bridge, Castrelo and Santa Uxía.

Puente de Olveiroa

Situated in the middle of the Xallas River, the Olveiroa Bridge is a must for pilgrims on their way to Santiago. In addition, if you manage to get out of the way and follow the river against the current you will reach the Fervenza reservoir.

Gastronomy

In general, in the municipality of Dumbría seafood products stand out, that is to say, fish with dishes made with turbot, hake, cod, etc. and seafood in general. Special mention should be made of all the seafood “caldeiradas” that are prepared in the Costa da Morte area, with fresh and high quality products. The meat also has a high quality thanks to the local pastures, highlighting the beef, game and veal. Of great importance is also the cheese with denomination of origin of Arzúa-Ulloa, the peppers of Padrón, the octopus á feira and the empanadas.
