French Way from Ponferrada by bike

You can reach Ponferrada by your own means or we can help you with a transfer from any airport or station or any point you need.

We advise to arrive with enough time to visit the Templar castle and the old town, as Ponferrada is one of the towns with more history in the Camino.

Although this will not be the longest stage of your itinerary, it will certainly be the toughest, since the last stretch of the stage is a steep upwards hill that will take you, along 8 kilometres, from the province of León to that of Lugo, finishing in the small village of O Cebreiro.

O Cebreiro is a pre-Romanesque settlement famous for its pallozas, a traditional construction from the North-West of Spain. Given the importance and beauty of this enclave, it is an important place for pilgrims that will not leave anyone indifferent.

In a setting full of beauty and nature, this second stage will take you to Portomarín, on the banks of the river Miño. Along the way, you will cross the vibrant Sarria, where lots of pilgrims choose to start their Camino, so you will notice an increase in the number of walkers.

Once in Portomarín, take a stroll to discover the village, enjoy the views of the river and have give your legs a good rest.

Today’s stage will take you to Arzúa, the last stop before reaching Santiago. Along the way, you will pass by Palas de Rei and Melide, the latter known for the quality of the octopus they prepare.

In Arzúa, you can visit some cheese museums, as well as the cheese and honey dissemination centre, both local products of great value.

Today you will face the last stage of this adventure, which will be very special. As you get closer to Santiago, you will cross Monte do Gozo, from where the towers of the cathedral will appear in sight for the first time. From here, a few more pedal strokes and you will find yourself in Compostela’s busy old town.

Enjoy the first time you glance up at the cathedral, as it will make you feel things you will never forget.

Santiago had a lot to offer: history, culture, art, gastronomy… Take as much time as you wish to get to know the town and, if you can, its surroundings.
