This section is where the Sierra de Aizkorri mountain range is found, where we highlight the change of
scenery and culture, and which is crossed through the San Adrián Tunnel, also known as the ‘Boca del
Infierno’ (Hell’s Mouth). The stage ends in Salvatierra/Agurain, a walled town with two fortress
churches.
Recommendation Pilgrim
This stage will be hard for people with some kind of disability as there are stretches of steep
slope that can prevent a good route, so they should seek the collaboration of companions to help
them complete the stage. Pilgrims with bikes at some points will be forced to get off their bikes to
continue.
Route
Itinerary
Km 0 ‧ Zegama
We start the stage from the church of San Martin de Tours, taking the GI-2637 road towards Goialdea,
which we cross to Iruetxeta, passing next to its hermitage. Taking the hamlet of Buenavista as a
reference point, we take a path on the left and continue uphill to the hermitage of Sncti Spiritu, a
former pilgrims’ hospital.
Passing the hermitage, we will finally reach the incredible San Adrián tunnel, so that we can cross
the Aizkorri mountain range and find, on the other side, the hermitage of San Adrián. We continue
along the path and reach the border that separates Guipúzcua from Álava.
We descend along a path in the direction of the caves of Zugarramurdi, and then follow the river
that flows into the valley, which we follow to finally reach Zalduondo. We pass this town, take the
A-3018 road, going round the Balsa Madura and, when we reach the San Millán hermitage, we take a
turn-off to the right towards Ordoñana.
Km 21,9 ‧ Salvatierra/Agurain
Passing this last village, we continue along the previous road which ends at the A-3016, we follow
it and it finally takes us to Salvatierra.
