What to see

Iglesia de la Purísima Concepción

This church, dating from between the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century, consists of a single nave with a Latin cross plan. Made of masonry and brick, it was fortunate not to be destroyed during the War of Independence, thanks to the artillery cannons it hid, as the rest of the village was almost completely destroyed. In 1990 the temple underwent a major restoration.

Palacio de los Mexía

Also known by the name of Palacio de los Lastra, it is a Renaissance-style manor house built by order of the Lastra or Mexía family, natives of Mérida.

Over time, this palace underwent several renovations and, despite having been renovated countless times, the manor house has the same entrance doorway that the building had in 1525.

The gastronomy of Torremejía is very similar to that of the rest of the community to which it belongs. Extremaduran food is based on products such as sausages, hams, cured pork loin and chorizos from Extremadura, pork meats and sheep and goat cheeses. Recipes such as pork stews, cardincha de paleta de borrego, patatera, frito extremeño, chanfaina de cabrito, salted or gilded cod, gazpachos extremeños and potaje de vigilia stand out. In confectionery, the famous Soletilla cakes, the rice casserole and the técula-mécula stand out.
